Traditional Archery Is A Very Accessible Sport

Archery is a very basic sport. It involves the shooting of arrows with a bow. Naturally, the objective is to hit a target. There are a variety of possible targets, and there are a variety of rules that can be employed with every game, hence the distinction between many forms of the sport.

The most popular incarnation is one that is centuries old, however. Aptly called as traditional archery, it merely involves the usage of a bow and arrows to hit a particular target: a circular surface with graduated diameters, with the smaller diameters awarding bigger points. Indeed, it's just the archer and his bow, and the distance between him and the target will be traversed by the arrow he will shoot. Man versus nature? Not quite. Man against himself is a more appropriate description.

You see, with traditional archery, and any other form of archery competition for that matter, you have full control on the trajectory and direction of your arrow's path. Everything lies in your pre-shot preparation, including the pointing of the arrow and the stringing of the same. Once the arrow is released, the trajectory will merely follow the path you have decided for the same. Whether or not the target is hit will depend on the skills you have employed before the arrow was shot.

Indeed, environmental conditions are at play. The wind, the rain, and even the snow, if applicable, play crucial roles in determining the path of the arrow. But these factors should have been taken into consideration before shooting the arrow. It's not about luck. Archery is all about how well you will prepare for your shot.

Traditional archery does not allow the usage of all kinds of bows. Basically, the archer is limited to a longbow, a selfbow, or a recurve bow, depending on the event. Also, the distance usually does not exceed 200 yards or 180 meters, so it's a battle of accuracy more than anything else.

Traditional archery is a pretty accessible sport. Most archery clubs have equipments which you can borrow. Arrows are reusable until they get worn out. It's not an expensive sport.

But there are only a few dedicated archery ranges in the world. Traditional archery is not really a pick-up-and-play type of sport. You can't practice anywhere you choose. Often, you'd have to join clubs to be able to use their facilities. Or you can make a request with school's that have a dedicated archery range for a few hours of usage.
